Foot In Mouth
by Stephanie Olson, Set Me Free Ministries Co-founder
Well, I did it again. I stuck my foot directly in my mouth.
I was at an event in which a television reality star–a rather, shall we say, outspoken, not very nice television reality star–was in attendance. I walked by her when I first entered the venue, and when I found my friends, I immediately opened my mouth and told them she was here and that she was such a nasty, nasty woman.
I must say that my friends did an excellent job at trying to tell me in the most loving way to shut up. I didn’t get it. I kept talking until one of my friends said, “Stephanie, she is with the people sitting directly in front of us.”
D'oh! After my friends suggested I go to the event table and purchase some duct tape, I began to feel extremely bad. At first, I felt bad only because I felt like I had been caught. But then, as the Holy Spirit began to convict me, I realized that no matter what this woman is like on national television, she is loved by Christ and I had just disparaged her. I was being mighty un-Christlike at that moment.
And then God reminded me of the passages in James. “If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one’s religion is useless.” (James 1:26)
And James 3:10 says, “Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so.”
I got a Holy Spirit spanking that night. Our job as believers is to love others and bring them into the Kingdom of God. We can only do that if we act like Jesus. I certainly was not doing that.
So, as I head to the very same venue today, with the very same person, I will put on Christ, and perhaps out of this untamed tongue will come only blessings. Oh, and I might bring along my own duct tape.
